It’s not spring yet, but it sure feels like it down here. In between “winter” and our 6 months of summer are a few terrific weeks of blue skies and mild temps, sometimes even a nice soft rain. It doesn’t get much better.

Feels great to be engaged, now for the wedding. We both want something simple, which is awesome because that’s all the budget we can muster. We’re currently planning at warp speed to hit our chosen date: April 9th 2011. It’s sorta f’d up that you seemingly always have to add the year. Why on earth would people want to wait a year to get married? I mean, I understand why some do it, it just seems a little lame. Either get married or don’t. It doesn’t have to be a grand production, just do it. The more we plan the more eloping sounds great. We’re pretty serious about premarital counseling, so we won’t get hitched before it’s done… which is actually just two weeks before our chosen date. Especially since invitations have gone out I guess we’ll have to wait until then. :D

A lot of people are asking about where we registered. The truth is that we didn’t; deliberately. I know, in some ways that’s not very kind to people who really want to be generous. I know it makes us seem pious in a really silly way. I just don’t want gifts. That’s my opinion, not necessarily Cora’s opinion, but we did agreed to not register for any gifts. If you want to give us something, that’s awesome, we’re thankful. Weddings are an occasion where people feel compelled to give a gift, any gift really. Even if it’s one picked by price from a list. We’re not into it. We’re all ready blessed and don’t even need the basics that a lot of young couples do. So, if you want to give us something, thank you, but you’re on your own. We’d much rather everyone came and enjoyed our wedding with us.

Premarital counseling has been great. I’m looking forward to more teaching on conflict resolution and communication. I’m sure my parents have found a way to communicate but honestly, it’s not something us kids saw a great example of. Cora and I are both kinda quiet, we’ve done pretty well so far at forcing ourselves to talk about issues. It seems like something that could fall by the wayside so easily. That scares the shit out of me.

Finally going to make it out to a Spring Training baseball game this weekend. I’m ashamed to say that I’ve lived here almost five years but have yet to take in a Cactus League game. We’re headed to a new stadium in Scottsdale, it’s amazing how a few weeks of games warrants multiple stadiums. I know they turn a profit but it’s hard to imagine such infrastructure for so limited use. Whether it works out on the balance sheet or not it’s probably a huge waste, but it am what it are.

I’m back in the office for the heavy metal band after a month working on some random stuff and then a stint at Blade. The last few months were great, I got to meet some new people and work on some fun projects. But it is good to be back with a steady client.

My church is merging with another reformed church in town. It’s great to be attending a church that values mission before pride. Together Praxis and East Valley Bible are better than they were apart. I can’t say that EVBC is really the sort of church that I would have chosen to go to. I have a thing against churches with coffee shops and more stage lights than a good indie rock show. I’d like to think they do have their priorities right and this move gives weight to that. The life cycle of a church can be rough and hopefully this merger will create a church that bridges that gap. They’ve setup a blog to help describe the merger as it happens over the next few months. http://www.redemptionaz.com

Cora and I are doing great. We’ve been talking about marriage for a little bit now and I’m getting to a place where my qualms are being put to rest and our questions and concerns are being answered. Who knows, maybe by the end of the year all that will be stopping us is a healthy nervous fear. :) It’s been really amazing to see how someone can become such an integral part of your life in less than a year. We’ll be in Boise for Christmas, I look forward to introducing her to more old friends while we’re there.

Take it easy, you know I will.

The best and worst parts of freelance have once again become real to me. Some projects turn out great and others never seem to turn into billable hours. Such is life.

I went back to Boise a couple weeks ago, my mother’s dad died. It was a nice funeral, full of great stories. He was remembered for his contribution to his denomination, which really irked me, but it wasn’t my funeral, so whatever. I took Cora along, which was fantastic. We had talked about her meeting my parents, it was only a matter of when. Then all of a sudden I needed to go to Boise, and privately decided to not even bring it up with her. However one night it just fell out of my mouth. I did feel bad about putting her on the spot and about asking her to take time off of work on such short notice. But it was really nice to have her there. She liked my family and they liked her, so it really couldn’t have turned out better.

I’m enjoying my days working from home. I’d still like to get back into a more normal schedule come August, we’ll see. I’m working on good projects even if the money’s not what I’d like.

I need a new personal project. I don’t have the best track record of finishing personal films, but it just seems like it’s time for a new one. I’ve got a couple ideas. At the moment I have more than enough stuff to do in a day, if I can get far enough head of my bills I’ll have the time to wade into something fun and creative.

I’m a free man on July 1st. I can do what I please, when I please to do so. While most of that time will once again be stolen by working to pay bills and live a modern life, I’ll at least get to start a new adventure.

My contract is up and I’m trying my best to not jump right back into a new one. I have a few options, some better than others… some more fun, some with less pay. I can’t tell you how blessed I feel to have options.
So, hopefully I’ll spend a month doing smaller projects and then settle back into a contract position or a steady seat somewhere.

If you haven’t seen my new reel yet take a moment to check it out:

David Hildreth – Reel 2010 from David Hildreth on Vimeo.

A reel is never done, so it’ll probably change within a week or so. I can’t say I’m as immediately proud as I was of my reel last year, but it’s growing on me. ;)

Other areas of my life are also going great, really great actually. Everything is coming up Milhouse.
