I must protect this house
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
It’s starting to look like fall here in Tempe. It’s 80 degrees, skies are blue, leaves hold firmly to the branches of the few dozen trees, and ASU has swollen the population of this city to the breaking point.
Work is still pretty slow, all though we are talking about some fun projects on the horizon. The audio I need to finish my current DVD is finally getting worked on. No word on exactly when it’ll be finished, the producer wants a vacation, but I want my audio before that vacation. We’ll see how it turns out, either way we should be ready for our spring release date this time around.
I’ve got another quick church project to share:
When Worlds Collide: Can Science and Christianity Co-exist? from Praxis Church on Vimeo.
It’s a good thing the interview cut together as well as it did, because I literally just threw some clips on a timeline for this one. He seems pretty smart, a lot of people around church are excited for him to come and speak. I honestly stopped caring about how my faith and science fit together a few years back. I’m not smart enough to understand it, and faith isn’t supposed to be logical anyway. Some of the young earth creationist stuff is pretty silly if you ask me, there is no reason to drastically over simplify things. I believe my God loves me, that’s all I need.
I bought a Tetris arcade game a couple Saturdays back. A guy on Craigslist had a few different games for sale including two Tetris cabinets, one working and one with a broken monitor. When I got ahold of him the working game was gone, but he assured me that everything but the monitor on the second machine worked. You never know how things will turn out with Craigslist, but for $50 I figured it was at least worth a look. He answered the door with a baby in hand and asked me to be quiet because he just put his older daughter down for her nap. We walked through his house to his workshop and there was my machine in front of a few others. The side art was ripped and it was covered in thick dust, but all in all it looked to be in good shape. It’s hard to not trust a guy who offers to shake your hand with his right hand while holding a baby in his left. He said everything other than the monitor was working, so I handed him $50 and the game was mine.
I got a monitor off of eBay last week and ordered new side art on Friday. I still haven’t decided whether or not I want to repaint it, it doesn’t look bad, but the sides are dingy and nothing I’ve tried has gotten them clean. It’ll be fun to have a game around for people to play, it’s two players so I’ve got to brush up on my skills. I refuse to be embarrassed in my own house.

Working for the weekend
Kings of Leon - King of the Rodeo
It’s been a good week so far but my mind can’t help but wonder to this weekend. Especially after the less than restful weekends that I’ve been having lately, a weekend out of town is exactly what I need. This week is turning out to be nothing other than a mad dash to get projects finished.
I’ve got another Church project to share. Initially I was only going to have a week to throw something together to announce a more permanent home of Praxis’ Tempe Mission. Thankfully the announcement was pushed back a week because the video wouldn’t have made it. You’ll hear the VO change when the date comes up. I did all I could to make the two recording sessions match but it’s really quite an impossible task. I was more personally responsible for this project and was definitely more embarrassed when it played in service. No matter now many times I watch my own work in front of friends or superiors or clients I still get nervous. Especially when that break in the VO was coming… lol, I doubt the people sitting next to me knew why I was staring so intensely at the ground.

I found out early on that our creative director and pastor are big fans of kinetic typography. To be more honest that I should… I’ve really grown to hate that style. It’s played out, don’t get me wrong, there is always room for more creativity. I just don’t feel like I’ve got the chops to do anything new with it. If the style was more natural for me I guess I’d like it better, but my kinetic typography just comes out more simplistic than clean and modern.
I also finished some composites for Everything’s Eventual yesterday. I had promised the work a week earlier but I can’t exactly tell my boss that when he changes my schedule. I’m looking forward to getting the shots to the director and off my hard drives. I know he’s looking forward to getting them into the movie so they can finish it.
Take it easy, I should have pictures of my little trip next week.

The way things fall
MuteMath - Odds
It’s been a busy week. I’ve been churning out cut after cut at work and giving my evenings away to a couple different projects.
At Praxis we have these groups called Missional Communities, most would refer to them as small groups, but anymore that term has a pretty lame connotation.
This is a promo video I edited for my church that helps to educated our congregation about the groups and hopefully will get some more people involved.

Following this link will take you to the videos mentioned in the promo. There is a great explanation about the groups and then a few interviews about what being a part of them has done for some people.
My church runs over a 1,000 people on a Sunday divided into two missions and three services. An optimistic estimate would be to say that a fifth of those people are in a MC, so there is a lot of room for improvement.
The situation I wrote about in my last post is still on my mind all too often. I had a big paragraph written out about it and then decided that it’s exactly the sort of thing that didn’t need to be written… so I un-wrote it.
It’s about 95 degrees here, which means it’s “fall”. It also means that I’m not confined to an air conditioned box all day.
I’m going for a walk, take it easy.
