I’m about ready to leave the country

SiCKO, This might hurt a little.

I got ahold of a screener copy of Michael Moore’s latest film SiCKO today. It’s is almost undeniably his best. Most who have heard something about it might say that it is about America’s 50 million uninsured citizens. It isn’t, no it’s much worse than that. The movie is in fact the story of the other 250 million people who have health insurance. From the nightmares of denied policies to 9/11 rescue workers and the free healthcare systems of the rest of the 1st world. Sicko paints a bleak and disheartening picture of the American healthcare system, I highly recommend seeing it.
Although Michael Moore’s style of documentary is becoming more and more popular, i’m not so sure that is a good thing. Moore wants people to trust him, and when they see his movies they expect the truth and a certain amount of fairness. You hear all the time about how conservative fox news is or how liberal the washington post is but in the end most journalists at least try to stick to the basic rules of journalism. Give both sides of the argument and don’t give an opinion unless the page heading reads op-ed. Michael Moore doesn’t even have to pretend to stick to any rules.
I like most of his movies but i definitely take them with a grain of salt. For example in the beginning of the movie Moore makes a big point of a ranking of the world’s healthcare systems. America is like 37th or something awful. Later in the movie he takes some people to Cuba where they receive free healthcare, no questions asked. Moore shows cuba to be these people’s savior, yet on that same list that he touted earlier Cuba is listed behind the US in quality of care.

My little foray into vinyl is going well. I now own half a dozen albums and am having a lot of fun searching record stores for more. The simple act of shopping for records is a lot more enjoyable that i thought. There are a few good stores around Tempe but there are many more awful ones. My current little collection includes albums by the beatles, led zeppelin, radiohead, u2, elton john, and dolorean. Pretty eclectic selections but i’ll fill in the holes along the way. The A side of the magical mystery tour is lame, but other then that i like em all, it really is amazing how different they sound on vinyl.

In other news i get to head home here in two weeks, I am so excited. I am weary of the plane ride, this little fear of flying is really starting to becoming a problem. I’ve never had a bad experience on a plane and use to like flying. Who knows what is wrong with me.

My first entry to the Heinz contest has been posted. Check it out

I’d write more but it took me a week to just write that much.

Meatloaf with red potatoes and stuffing

MMM sweet potatoes

I love boston market.

It’s just soo good. Where else can you get a decent meal for $7? No where. I’ve basically stopped cooking all together, apart from the cereal i am currently munching on, and some chicken and rice, I do not cook anything. I got to this point the first time i lived on my own but it feels more permanent now. I still enjoy cooking here and there, but the lack of a grill and funds for meat means that all that i was cooking was freezer food anyway. Pasta, pizza, fish fillets… the extent of my meals up until now was pulling something out of the freezer and “cooking” it.

It seems i’ve moved even beyond even that though. Between work and school i very honestly don’t have time to cook 4 days out of the week. The other 3 i just want to sit in my boxer briefs and play wii so cooking isn’t much of an option then either.

So i roam from restaurant to restaurant looking for something that resembles real food. Boston Market has precisely that…. not real food mind you but something that gives the feeling of a real meal. Not to mention the fact they have sweet potatoes year round.

It’s such a bachelor place though, i was at one just a few days ago and there was 1 woman and 7 men in the restaurant, that includes the staff.
They really should just turn the seating area into a big living room, that’s where everyone would be eating if they could anyway.
Couches and TVs, maybe a few ugly lamps for effect, just a big place where you can sit, eat and relax.

Slashdot had an interesting story today about Heinz’s commercial contest. The marketing people at Heinz think they all suck.
They do.
This is awesome news for me. My first submission will be done in a week and we are shooting the other concept this friday. We got all the costumes we need, now i just have to figure out how i’m going to survive jumping into a dumpster :]
We have a real chance of winning this thing, and that 50 large will go a long way to pay off my student loans.

I don’t identify myself as a hipster. It seems that i have cemented my status as one though.

I bought a turn table a few days ago and am excited to buy my first vinyl records this week. I’m not sure what my first real record will be (although the Flash Gordon soundtrack would be a good time), i roamed a few record stores here in tempe over the weekend and had a lot of fun. I’m not sure i really need a new hobby, but it’l be fun to hear music in that format.

I’m working on a new look for the site (yea that’s 3 in a year), it’l be done in a few days. The biggest change will be how my content is organized.
