Hootenanny!
| Weezer - Island in the Sun (Hootenanny, Phoenix) |

So, this last Tuesday I got to rock out with Weezer and it wasn’t just kinda cool it was a-freaking-mazing. They are doing a little tour called Hootenanny in which they pick out a tiny venue and have a local radio station invite a hundred or so fans. The only catch is that you have to bring an instrument.
As I’ve mention I’ve been doing some free intern work for The EDGE 103.9 lately and while we didn’t get to shoot the show like we thought, it was a ton of fun to be a part of.
Weezer (and us) played six songs which are going to be compiled into a live CD at some point. They also signed everyone’s song book which was a nice touch.
The EDGE’s website has all six tracks, some photos and a bit of video.
Note: The above picture isn’t mine, you could kill a man with such a ridiculous vignette.
Speaking of The EDGE I shot a commercial for them and a local bar last friday. Shooting in an open bar with few lights and a small crew was challenging. We got all the footage we needed and then had a few beers, so all in all it was a good night. I’ll post the spot when I get it done later this week. It’s all handheld… and unfortunately it was my hand, so I get to spend more then a few hours doing some motion stabilization :|
I’ve started into my last leg of classes. I walked into Visual Effects I on wednesday and got syllabuses for the next 30 weeks. The teacher I’ve got from here on out is a great guy and really knows his stuff. I’m not really sure what I’m going to do in February but as long as I pay attention I’ll have a good shot at a roto job in LA. It’s a path that about a dozen recent graduates have taken…
But then again, why the hell would I want to goto LA?
I dunno, I’ve got a while to figure that out… I think,

Today I might actually…
| Austin Gibbs & The States - Vanilla |
I just got done with a few classes and let me tell you the end couldn’t have come sooner. For the most part Collins is great, but sometimes you get instructors that just don’t work out… and that makes going to class nothing but a chore.
Things are all good on the southwest front. I’m not working a whole lot but my rent is getting paid and I’m not starving so I can’t complain. The editing gig is officially bust, I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed being lied to. My latest pay check from the place bounced on it’s first try, so I might be making my first venture into small claims court… We’ll see.
I got to goto San Diego and see Bender this past weekend, which was great. We just chilled around San Diego’s downtown and went to Mission Beach. I also drank some Mead which was pretty good. I can’t say it was the most exciting trip I’ve ever taken, but I had a lot of fun just catching up with Nick. When we stepped abord his carrier for a tour I asked “Nick what happens if the Cylons were to come back right now?”
I thought it was funny :)
I am keeping quite busy with different projects. The internship for The EDGE 103.9 is still awesome and I’ve been doing a little editing for some friends at school.
The first thing I’ve got to share is an open to a show for The EDGE 103.9’s website. It’s an “AOL sessions” sort of show that features bands playing an acoustic show at the station’s studios.
Also availible in HD here.
I’ve been editing a couple of small contest projects for a group of friends and this is the latest one. It’s for Budget Rent A Car and has a pretty good chance of getting some recognition.
Also availible in HD here.
For a studio production class that just ended our group make a VH1 Behind the Music sort of documentary for a director who only directs for YouTube. It’s hil-freaking-larious if I do say so myself. We have a pretty good rough cut and in the coming weeks we hope to polish it up and maybe be slightly e-famous. Who knows, if nothing else it’s a great help to a friend’s DP reel.
That’s pretty much it for now, I get to go see a super secret Weezer show this week, I’ll have some photos to post from that later.

Under the hot spring sun
| Weezer - Simple Pages |
I was taking my usual walk to my local Circle K (the most excellent Circle K in fact) for some mexican coca cola (which is further proof of a benevolent God) and decided to listen to something I hadn’t put on my ipod in a while.
Weezer
Undoubtedly my favorite band back high school their last couple albums hadn’t really been all that amazing and I just hadn’t felt like listening to them in a while. I threw on the green album and began to remember why I loved them. They are releasing another self titled album (a red album I gather) this year and you can hear the single here (via HTFAF)
I did a 72 hour film festival this last weekend and I can safely say this is the last weekend film fest I will do for a very long time. Beyond all the drama that happened in our group (which, in the end, turned out for the best) I just don’t really enjoy the format anymore. We ended up going with a very simple concept and had a lot of fun shooting it, but I still just can get over making a film and knowing that it’s not our best work. You are so limited by the time constraints, that no matter how much effort you put in you’ll never be fully happy with the results. So it looks like my sixth festival will be my last for a while. A friend of mine threw out the idea of doing claymation or some other wacky format and I’d be down with that, but that’s mostly hypothetical at the moment.
Here is our entry for the Fuse 72 hour film festival entitled Pursuit. It, as always, is also available in HD.
My short is coming along nicely, I am currently story boarding what I have so far and at the same time trying to add a subplot. I’m using a neat little program to story board but it’s slow going. I have about 10 shots done, that gets me half way down the first of eighteen pages.
It’s going to hit 100 degrees for the first time this year any day now. I can’t say I’m ready for the summer heat but I am ready to spend my days at the bottom of my pool. :D
Late,
David
