I’m a free man on July 1st. I can do what I please, when I please to do so. While most of that time will once again be stolen by working to pay bills and live a modern life, I’ll at least get to start a new adventure.

My contract is up and I’m trying my best to not jump right back into a new one. I have a few options, some better than others… some more fun, some with less pay. I can’t tell you how blessed I feel to have options.
So, hopefully I’ll spend a month doing smaller projects and then settle back into a contract position or a steady seat somewhere.

If you haven’t seen my new reel yet take a moment to check it out:

A reel is never done, so it’ll probably change within a week or so. I can’t say I’m as immediately proud as I was of my reel last year, but it’s growing on me. ;)

Other areas of my life are also going great, really great actually. Everything is coming up Milhouse.

After waiting about a year I finally recieved the audio I need to finish my concert DVD project. There is still a lot of work to be done, but at least the end is now in sight. It looks like the next few weeks will consist of me going through the thousands of cuts in the concert one by one to make sure the audio is synced correctly. Solos and certain parts of the vocals needed to be fixed so sometimes things don’t line up quite right. This is the tedious part of editorial work. The DVD itself is almost done, I spent a week animating menus and writing scripts to author the disc. Thankfully it’s a pretty straightforward DVD, nothing extraordinary or complicated. Using DVD Studio Pro again really makes me want to learn Scenarist, Apple’s effort into authoring just seems more half hearted than ever.

I have started and trashed half a dozen blog entries since my last. I can’t seem to write these days… so I’ll stop trying.
Things are well, I hope everything is well with you.

It’s been a good week so far but my mind can’t help but wonder to this weekend. Especially after the less than restful weekends that I’ve been having lately, a weekend out of town is exactly what I need. This week is turning out to be nothing other than a mad dash to get projects finished.

I’ve got another Church project to share. Initially I was only going to have a week to throw something together to announce a more permanent home of Praxis’ Tempe Mission. Thankfully the announcement was pushed back a week because the video wouldn’t have made it. You’ll hear the VO change when the date comes up. I did all I could to make the two recording sessions match but it’s really quite an impossible task. I was more personally responsible for this project and was definitely more embarrassed when it played in service. No matter now many times I watch my own work in front of friends or superiors or clients I still get nervous. Especially when that break in the VO was coming… lol, I doubt the people sitting next to me knew why I was staring so intensely at the ground.

Praxis Tempe Misson Promo from Praxis Church on Vimeo.

I found out early on that our creative director and pastor are big fans of kinetic typography. To be more honest that I should… I’ve really grown to hate that style. It’s played out, don’t get me wrong, there is always room for more creativity. I just don’t feel like I’ve got the chops to do anything new with it. If the style was more natural for me I guess I’d like it better, but my kinetic typography just comes out more simplistic than clean and modern.

I also finished some composites for Everything’s Eventual yesterday. I had promised the work a week earlier but I can’t exactly tell my boss that when he changes my schedule. I’m looking forward to getting the shots to the director and off my hard drives. I know he’s looking forward to getting them into the movie so they can finish it.

Take it easy, I should have pictures of my little trip next week.

I left the office last Friday before the Labor Day weekend knowing that on Tuesday I was going to have to hit the ground running. I had checked in a rough cut of a project to my boss late in the week and he wasn’t impressed. That was fine… I didn’t like it either to be honest. He made some vauge comments and I spent my weekend with a few changes rattling around the back of my mind. Tuesday morning my boss calls and informs me that the album’s producer would be sending me a new cut of audio. Not a new revision of the same song, but a new cut of a new song. So basically it was my job to redo two weeks worth of work in two days. This is how it turned out, it’s not terrible but I can’t honestly say I like it. My boss was happy and from what I’ve heard others liked it, so it’s served its purpose.

HALFORD III: Winter Songs Promo from David Hildreth on Vimeo.

After a small disaster with Amazon.com I got my hands on The Beatles: RockBand on Wednesday. I’m not sure I can really even explain how fun the game is, you really need to play it. The attention to detail is astounding, the songs are well chosen and it’s just a great experience. I invited a few friends over last night to rock out with me and had a great time. I have yet to try out the harmonies but I’ve heard that it takes the game to a whole other level.

It’s another busy weekend. Having four concurrent projects is proving to be no fun. Even though half of it is free I can’t complain, there are too many people around without any work.
I’m really looking forward to the end of the month, a carefree weekend visiting friends in San Francisco is just what I need. :)

It’s been a good week. I headed out to San Diego on Monday morning, did a few hours of work and then had the evening to myself. Besides San Diego being a reasonable temperature during the summer, it’s just a great place to be left with some free time. I spent a few hours just hanging out on the beach and found an awesome brew pub to get some dinner. Tuesday I woke up and had a leisurely drive back to Phoenix… it was a pretty good way to start the work week. I don’t mind traveling for work, but it’s great that I only have to do it about once a month. I’m just not cut out for business travel.
On Wednesday I rolled into the office to hear that my project’s release date had once again been pushed back. This time it’s been postponed to next spring. Once again it’s not my fault, which is good, but the delays are only keeping my from renegotiating my contract. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good that I can even use those terms to describe this job. They have been very happy with my work and every indication I get is that I’m there, and on salary, for as long as I’d like to be. It’s a blessing, I just wish my personal budget included health insurance and more savings.

Speaking of health insurance, check out this clip from the Rachel Maddow show over on MSNBC. If you’re reading this via RSS or on Facebook you’ll need to follow the link below to the original post.

In my opinion there is currently no debate between the right and left on healthcare. One side wants to act like everything is perfect and the other wants to actually fix the problem. If you oppose the current healthcare plan (which is still very fluid) please educate yourself about the way other countries handle this and please don’t just accept our current norm as a solution.

David Bazan is releasing a new album next month and it’s absolutely amazing. The lyrics are thoughtful and at time heartbreaking, the music is inspired and well produced. It is at times a bit over produced, this is definitely the Achilles’ Heel sort of sound. After hearing nothing but acoustic Bazan, for what seems like years, it’s a welcome change to my ears. You can stream the whole album with a pre-order, I can’t recommend it more.

I got to see (500) Days of Summer recently. I’m too pretentious (yeah, do the math on that) to call it the best movie I’ve seen all year… but I did really, really enjoy the shit out of it. Go see it.
